M&M’s stand for Mars and Murrie. Forrest Mars, son of the founder of the Mars chocolate company and Bruce Murrie (son of the president of Hershey’s chocolate at the time) teamed up.

Mars was in Europe and discovered Smarties and took the idea of the sugar outer shell that stopped the chocolate from melting.
